Samburu game reserve is located in Samburu county about 330 kilometers from Nairobi. The reserve derives its name from the Samburu people, Kenya’s cattle herding Nomads. The Ewaso Nyiro River flows through the reserve providing water to the game in this arid region.
The Samburu national reserve was one of the two areas in which George and Joy Adamsom raised Elsa the Lioness, made famous in the best - selling book and award winning movie Born Free.
The reserve is renowned for its rare animal species unique to the park such as the Grevy’s zebra, long necked gerenuk, reticulated giraffe and Beisa oryx also referred as Samburu special. Predators such as the leopard, cheetah and lion are found.
Other animals frequently seen in the reserve include elephant, Buffalo, dik- dik, impala, waterbuck, warthog, grants gazelle and olive baboon.
Birdlife is abundant with over 350 species. These include sunbirds, bee-eaters, kingfishers, marabou stork, tawny eagle, guinea fowl, lilac breasted roller, secretary bird, superb starling, hornbills, Somali ostrich and vultures.
